Sorry, Angerexia... I was solo last night also (the wife went with on Friday to the Wiltern show), but I didn't see your message here until this morn.
As always, excellent show. And it seems that Extreme blew Ratt off the stage for the third time in as many nights. (Presumably this has been going on all tour) Same set as the Wiltern show, except they swapped out "Slide" and replaced it with "(It's A) Monster", and they nixed "Midnight Express" completely. I've been seeing Extreme and Nuno live since February 1993, and this was the first time that I did not hear that song or Nuno's cheesy "get-paid-by-the-note" joke. I wonder if they were running a few minutes behind and needed to make some time cuts?
Personal highlight of the show: let's face it, Ratt was much more popular than Extreme ever was, so about 80% of the crowd was there to see them, with Extreme as a bonus. After Extreme's set, I went outside on the balcony to imbibe of a tasty adult beverage and I was totally blown away by the number of people who had never seen the band before who were saying things "What a great f**king show!" and "Holy s**t that was awesome!" Really made me happy to hear them getting props from people who might not have cared about them an hour earlier. Well done lads, you won 'em over.
Lowlight of the night: standing on the floor after Extreme's set next to four teenagers (all ages show) who were going on about the awesomeness that they just witnessed. That was cool... what was not cool was realizing that I've been a fan of the band probably about as long as those turds have been alive. That was decidedly not cool. ( )
There were a couple funny tech snafus in Extreme's set; during "Take Us Alive" Nuno's guitar simply stopped working at one point. Just - quit. I don't know if he came unplugged at the backline or something, but the geetar just went away for about 20 seconds. The band made light of it, and someone backstage started playing an acoustic through the PA to fill out the sound just as the problem got sorted, so there was an overlap with two guitars for about 5 seconds. But it was the weirdest thing I've ever seen/heard at a show before. (On stage, at least)
Sheila E looked and sounded a-mazing. She was wearing this little black dressy deal that made it perfectly clear to all that she was, in fact, a properly constructed example of the female of the species. Fifty-frickin'-one years old...... wow.
Ratt was MUCH better tonight than at the Wiltern show. And by that, I mean Pearcy actually looked and sounded like he gave a poop. One cool thing which I didn't notice Friday; as the lights were going down after "Back For More", Blotzer sorta looked up overhead and kissed his hand and pointed up, in silent tribute to the late Robbin Crosby (who wrote the song). That's how I interpreted it, anyway, so it was a nice little unexpected poignant moment. |

Hehe...I was very tempted to make him wait, but my girl was already asleep when I told him to come pick me up. Plus I was exhausted and sore...I have rheumatoid arthritis and man it did a number on me standing for so long...but still sooooo worth it!!!! I was reminded of the last time I saw them thinking "did I hurt this much afterward?" Which I didn't cuz I didn't have RA yet, or it wasn't as bad as it is now.
I know it is "forbidden" to take pix in the HOB (haha) but I tried with my EnV Touch...I had to edit them as best I could since they came out fuzzy or the colors too red. It's not much but something for me to remember this awesome night!

I will echo what others have said about the band's performance last night at the Anaheim HOB (very cool venue btw). The sound was excellent and the band's performance was passionate and fiery. It was my first time seeing Extreme. I've seen Nuno before with his various acts, but to see Extreme together was incredible.
It ('s a Monster) was one of the highlights to me. It's not necessarily a favorite tune of mine, but the band rocked it hard. All of the songs had a really heavy edge to them last night. Great stuff. The band looked like they were having a blast on stage together. I'm envious of those of you who will be seeing them in the future. You will LOVE the shows!!!
My theory, by the way, is that the band is slowly working different songs into their sets so that by the time they do their Extreme-only shows later in the tour they will be ready to film the shows for a live DVD offering in the future. Just a feeling I have... |

Thanks for posting the pictures! I don't get why HOBs tend to be so strict regarding photos and the like. Just let people have their fun. As long as the band is ok with it, the venue should be, too.
Sorry to hear about the RA pain. I hope you're getting lots of rest today. _________________ In replay, you just see it over and over... |

From Metal Sludge poster FooFighterFlis:
| Quote: | I disagree on Extreme's songs being pretty dire. They've got some good stuff. Not ALL of it is good, but it was worth driving way the fuck out to Anaheim for.
Yeah, the guitar geek thing, I wasn't prepared for that. (Just as an aside, you know who the Nuno fans reminded me of? On "Cheap Trick at Budokan," during the long intro to "Need Your Love," you can hear all the Japanese girls shrieking, "Robeeeen! Robeeen!" Well, in between every single Extreme song, guys were yelling with their deep voices, "Nuno! Nunoooo!" and it just fucking cracked me up.) There was a big discussion among all the guitar dudes around me about whether or not Nuno would play "Flight of the Wounded Bumblebee" (he did).
I really wanted to be on Nuno's side of the audience so I could stare at him cuz he's super mega-hot, but it was tough because every guitar guy in the crowd was jammed on that side, presumably to watch his fingers (and also Warren Demartini later on, who would be on the same side of the stage). So we WERE on Nuno's side, but couldn't really get up much closer than this (and this is a cellphone pic...the HOB wasn't allowing cameras, so thanks to Trashy for hiking to the car to put my camera back...oh well):
Image
As far as Gary Cherone goes, sorry folks, I'm a convert. I have never seen him in live videos, and I haven't seen any of their MTV videos for at least 15 years, so I didn't really remember or have much of a clue about how he would move/entertain, but I gotta say, I think he's a GREAT frontman in terms of energy and connecting to the audience. I didn't know every song they played, and yet I was totally into it the entire time because of Gary. Yeah, it's gay aerobics, yeah it's flamboyant, but who fucking cares? We can't very well complain that Pearcy is too complacent onstage, and then bitch when someone is actually putting in effort and say they're *trying too hard.* Well, I guess on Sludge we can.
Plus, big props to Gary and Nuno for being in SHAPE which I always enjoy, as a female audience member. Nuno is a beautiful, beautiful man and I would totally have little Kid Egos with him. He sure does have a purdy mouth.
Garbageman, yelling in my ear: "I think Extreme's background vocals are enhanced."
Me: "What? Nuno just took off his shirt. Did you say something?"
I disagree with Gman about the pace of the show. I didn't feel like it took a nosedive after More Than Words. On the contrary I thought it was pretty even keel all the way through. Sheila E., by the way, looked gorgeous. She's gotta be late 40s/early 50s, right? She HAS to have had some work done. She came out in a little black babydoll dress and was grinning from ear to ear as she drummed on the Michael Jackson cover "Wanna Be Startin' Something," and it was very cool.
Other notes:
They did "Play With Me" which I fucking LOVE (lame verses, yes, but I love the chorus, and the fact that it's a very uptempo song) and Nuno intro'd it by saying (paraphrasing here), "This one's on Guitar Hero...hey Guitar Hero fans, pick up a real fuckin' guitar."
When they played More Than Words, Gary cracked, "Wow, even the Ratt fans are singing!" Haha
I liked the country western hoedown-esque song they did. It's a new one, I didn't catch the title, but the lyrics are something like, "You better run, you better hide..." (?)
After Hole Hearted (which I fucking LOVED), they did the whole intro and the first line of "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and I was really bummed that they stopped there. Would have loved to have seen a full cover of that.
They didn't do Kid Ego, which surprised me since that was their first single off their first album. Would have also liked to have heard Mutha, Don't Wanna Go to School Today.
All in all, I would definitely go see Extreme again. Great singer, great guitarist. High energy, good connection with the crowd (oh, and yes, the sound WAS a bit muddy, since someone else mentioned that).
On to Ratt. First things first. Before we discuss the music, let's talk about their appearances. Stephen actually looked pretty good. He must be hydrating and using lots of Pond's cold cream, because he looked much less leathery and more supple than usual. Maybe he took a spa weekend. Bobby "Cheesecake, mawfuggah!" Blotzer looked winded by the 2nd song, but nah, I'm just givin' him shit. He looked good and sounded good. Warren Demartini, I love him. Always thought he was hot back in the day, and though he was wearing a disconcerting amount of eyeliner, he still looked pretty fucking good last night. He definitely had his guitar wankers staring at him the whole night and he sounded great. Warren also has that funny stance when he plays guitar, it's so distinctive...it's like he's shrugging as he plays (do you guys know what I mean? He's been doing it for years, it's his posture. It's so distinctive.)
Gman, you are being too cruel towards Pearcy in your review. You gave him a good compliment last night when you told me, "Well, Stephen Pearcy actually exceeded my incredibly low expectations of him!" I thought Stephen was ok, better than I thought he'd be, but still making the crowd sing too much and mugging too much. But compared to what I'd read on Sludge, I thought he was better than that. And yes, the smaller stage worked in his favor. The only other time I saw Ratt was 10 years ago opening for Poison in a 6,000 seat venue, and that stage was too big and really highlighted his laziness as a frontman.
(Remember how I said that I already had part of my Ratt review written before the show even happened? I was thinking that I'd have to write, "Stephen Pearcy...wow...if he's this enthusiastic onstage, imagine how he'd be in bed," but he was actually a little peppier than that. )
Ratt did "I Want a Woman," so I was thrilled cuz I love that song (shut up, everyone. It's very catchy. lol) We left when there were still maybe 3 songs left, but it wasn't because Ratt wasn't good...it was more because my back was killing me, my feet hurt (damn platforms are great for seeing over tall guys, but after a few hours...) and it was late...11:30 by the time we left and Ratt was still on.
Now, I DID enjoy Ratt, but honestly, if we're gonna turn this into a comparison thing, overall, I wouldn't go out of my way to see Ratt again where I would for Extreme.
I personally preferred Extreme to Ratt, but in terms of the overall crowd reception, I would give the SLIGHT edge to Ratt. After Extreme, I told Gman I thought Ratt had a tough act to follow, and I think they did well.
Btw, sorry for the lack of setlists. The Ratt one, well, they did all the hits except Lovin' You's a Dirty Job, plus all of Out of the Cellar, and Extreme, I didn't know every song, and I didn't feel like bugging the guy next to me for song titles like I did at the Kix show.
I did take video of the both bands with my phone, but honestly, the quality is so crappy, I'm not gonna bother posting them. *sigh* I wish they'd let me bring in my camera. |

Im so tired of people who don't care about Extreme or think of them as just a hair band, and then go see them realize how great they are. Wake up rock fans! We already know this, these guys should be selling a hell of alot more cd's and tickets!! |

Angerexia, I think I was right behind you. I had on a black top and was with my husband who has super long hair.
I have to say that I've seen Extreme at least half a dozen times and this was the BEST I've ever seen them. They rocked it! I was so surprised by the number of Ratt fans and YOUNG Ratt fans. Before Extreme came on I asked a young girl behind me (she must have been 14) if she wanted to move in front of my so she could see and she said she was going to wait until Ratt came on. I wanted to yell at her "Do you not understand what you're about to witness here?!". I was excited though to to hear everyone talking about what a great show Extreme put on. Love it!
I'm sorry that I missed the guys. I didn't know where to wait! |

With the authority and experience given to me by my 22 years of life, I can say it shouldn't make you so upset.
In certain aspects (especially music) the previous decades--I mean, until early 90's--were much better than nowadays.
In other words, you had the chance to witness a much better scenary than people my age or younger.
PS: Remember Freddie Mercury died when I was 4/5 years old. So, I had NO chance to see the classic Queen!! _________________ These are just silly words from a nightingale.
