This was my first time seeing Extreme, though I've been a fan since 1995. What a great experience!
Extreme is one of those bands that, seeing them live puts a huge smile on my face. It's such a joy to see a performance by people who are so polished at their craft, make such great music, preform so physically, and love what they're doing! I felt like I was seeing something of historical significance. (The world needs a concert DVD of this band!) It was a very "whole hearted" performance.
The venue used to be a small movie theater, and it wasn't overly crowded. I was comfortably 20 feet from the stage with a very clear view. (Wow!)
Several times the band expressed gratitude for the audience's enthusiastic reception... which was nice to hear. (The audience was great on the sing-alongs.) The band acknowledged that it had been much too long since they had been to Denver and assured us of their desire to return. (I sure hope so!)
The set list was great. What I remember (not in order):
Play With Me
Decadence Dance
Get the Funk Out
More Than Words
It's a Monster
Hole Hearted
Rest In Peace
Cupid's Dead
Am I Ever Gonna Change?
Star
Take Us Alive
...plus Nuno's Pornograffitti bumble-bee guitar solo and, later, another acoustic guitar solo,
...plus a great rendition of a Michael Jackson song I'm not sure the title of.
My only complaint of the night was that the sound was too loud (or poorly EQ'd), often rendering Nuno's guitar a smear of percussive noise (a tragedy, considering the quality of his playing). I benefited from being familiar with the songs. But on "Play With Me," a song I'm not very familiar with, it was pretty difficult to tell what I was listening to beyond the rhythm. Extreme's music certainly calls for better treatment. I think their audience is well beyond being impressed with loudness for loudness' sake. Mr. Sound Man: Make them sound like the records! Loud? Okay. But also clear. If that means backing it down a notch, or re-EQ'ing it, by all means, do it!
I look forward to seeing the band again.

Yeah, they didn't play that. That song does kick. I'd also love to hear "Run." That groove is to die for! =o) |

It was really nice to see these guys again after so many years. Set list above looks right. The mj cover was "got to be starting something', i think.
You can tell the band is having a blast, their energy speaks for itself. The music and singing were spot on. Sound was really loud and bassy but that's what i expected at the Ogden.
Overall, great show. Talked to Nuno for a bit and had him sign my ticket stub before they left for KC. Such a good cat.
Hope to see them back in town to headline. |

Let me add, it was watching the Guitar Wars DVD (amazon dot com/Guitar-Wars-Paul-Gilbert/dp/B0000QWXMW) earlier this month that inspired me to get on the Internet and find out if Extreme was touring. It's a pricey DVD (and CD), but it's worth the price. Both Nuno and Gary are on it. The performances and the sound can't be beat. |
